6.11.1. Description

Processing categories: biogenic

Normbeis3 reads gridded land use data and emissions factors and produces gridded normalized biogenic emissions. Normbeis3 is the first program in the SMOKE-BEIS3 model; Rawbio is the corresponding program for SMOKE-BEIS2. The gridded land use includes 230 different land use types. Emissions factors are provided for each land use type. The output gridded domain is the same as the input domain for the land use data. Emission fluxes are normalized to 30 °C, and isoprene and methyl-butenol fluxes are also normalized to a photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) of 1000 µmol/m2s. Normbeis3 also computes normalized emissions for winter months, using a winter factor read in from the emissions factor table.

For BEIS version 3.09, Normbeis3 outputs winter and summer normalized emissions for four species/compounds listed below, as well as winter and summer leaf area indices (LAI). The output units for ISOP, MONO and OVOC are grams of carbon per hour; the output units for NO are grams of nitrogen per hour; and the output units for LAI are meters squared per meters squared.

Variable Name Description
ISOP Isoprene
MONO All monoterpenes
OVOC All other VOCs
LAI Leaf area indices

For BEIS version 3.14, Normbeis3 outputs winter and summer normalized emissions for the 35 species/compounds (including 14 monoterpenes and 1 sesquiterpene) listed below, as well as winter and summer leaf area indices (LAI). The output units for NO are grams of nitrogen per hour; the output units for LAI are meters squared per meters squared; the units for all other species/compounds are grams of carbon per hour.
